Creating audio for a video game, what makes good soundtrack?

So I’m collaborating with some people on a video game. This guy I know has entered a competition with a team he created at our university and he needed someone to create audio.

Now I took some audio production courses, they’re part of my degree, but we mostly did stuff like editing ready made audio on the computer using programs (Wave Lab) or recording in the studio or with a recorder outside. But I didn’t really create any music.

I know some piano and play the drums and I plan to create music using some software such as fruityloops or recording to the computer through MIDI.

Now what I want to ask is, do you have any suggestions? Of course sounds of explosions and things like that I’ll find online. I can’t record that. But I do want the make the music myself if possible. Any ideas? From what he said it’ll be a game with robots.

Well I’d prefer to create the audio myself if possible rather than going for some royalty free downloads online.

What makes a good soundtrack you ask? If the songs you want to use go along with the game’s mood or atmosphere. You had said it would be a game with robots and stuff, but most audio styles could be incorporated into it – if anything something techno like but that’s just my opinion. But yeah have fun it and I hope it turns out alright!!
