Where could I obtain the rights to a piece of music by György Ligeti?
I am looking to obtain the right to use “Lontano” by György Ligeti in a short film. I’m wondering who owns the right to the music? Is the sheet music in the public domain? If so, are there any royalty free versions available? If not, do you know of any lesser orchestras that have performed it? I doubt any major orchestra will allow be to use their recording, let alone write back to me. Hopefully someone could help, I haven’t had any luck so far.
Thank you. Who are the publishers of Ligeti. Would it just be the orchestra that performed his music? Would i be able to obtain rights from them?
My intentions are to use ‘Lontano’ in a short film that will be submitted to film festivals around the United States.

Schott is the publisher of Ligeti’s “Lontano”, but if you are using a recording by an orchestra then there is another barrier getting permission from the record label and/or the orchestra.
I am under the impression that if a video is being created for educational purposes and isn’t being shown anywhere other than in the classroom for which the assignment was made, then there would be no need for permission. If you were distributing the video, placing it on youtube, making a profit from it, then permission definitely should be requested before using the music. I’m sure someone will correct me here if I’m wrong.
Edit: With the additional information, you will most definitely need to get permission from some organization, whether it be Schott, the publisher of the Composition, or the record label that recorded the composition.
