Royalty Free Music For Movies

Can I use the music from the Movies videogame in other stuff?

I am making a short student film and there was a song I wanted use from the Movie’s video game. I wanted to know if that music was royalty free and if I can legally use it in my student film that isn’t for profit. I want to be able to submit it to a film festival so I don’t want to use music that is copyrighted.

You may want to read copyright laws and what it says about the specific music.

In 2011 the copyright expires (75 years) . If the publication is of public domain, you may use it, but would be best to contact the copyright holder. It is unlikely you would need permission as this is a film and anyone can copy it. However, if you state that the short film is copyrighted by "whoever", you may be protected. The best thing would to get permission and then also attach, "by permission" in your film. It is in some instances decided by if you are using your film for profit or for historical reasons. At this point, it is unlikely that any copyright holder is either living or cares.

Contact the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. to obtain the answer. They will tell you on the phone if you can use that material legally.
