Public Domain Classical Music

Classical Music on my website: copyright question?

I want to put classical music on my website. I know that classical music that was written 200 years ago is in public domain now. But what about the recording ? Does the date of the recording make any difference for the copyright to be enforcable ? If yes, what is be the cut-off date ? I read somewhere that is 1972, is that true ?

They type of music doesn’t matter. The date of the copyright does. The “cut-off” slides with time; not a fixed date.
