Music In The Public Domain Download

A question concerning Heinrich Schuetz sheet music…?

you can download almost everything he wrote for free except the italian madrigals. all of his works are in the public domain, so why is it impossible to find those madrigals anywhere? does anyone know?

many thanks in advance.
@delicious manager: im glad to see you around! now your playing with me, right? but dont you think your (british?) humor should be a bit more refined? this is a serious question. you can download the entire “geistliche chormusik” but you dont find any of the madrigals (i can assure you that good old schuetz didnt use different clefs for those, and neither was there more effort necessary to transcribe them for illiterate people like you and me…)
…then again its true that music isnt being uploaded automatically. since i know the (modernized) printed edition of those five-part madrigals which are actually quite popular im even more curious why theyre not available online…

There is one very simple probable answer to this. Schütz’s madrigals were, as far as I am aware (but then, I know very little, as you know) were written partly in now defunct clefs such as soprano, mezzo-soprano and baritone. In addition, it is also likely that, as well as altering the clefs to be easily readable by modern musicians, some editorial work would have been done to ‘realise’ the madrigals and make them ready for modern performance and/or study. Such editions render the music in copyright, due to the editor’s right to have his work protected. This would mean that the music would not be available for free download. Of course, even if a non-edited version were available, someone still needs to UPLOAD it to make it available. Not every piece of music is automatically uploaded to the internet, after all.

A shame you still haven’t found the ‘shift’ key on your keyboard for those missing capitals!

I am actually quite surprised that you have found that ‘almost everything’ Schütz wrote is available for free, as I would have presumed a great deal of his music would have been subject to edition by music scholars eager to bring this fine composer’s music to the attention of a wider public.
