Can I use ‘public domain’ graphics free-of-charge for the cover of my written fiction…?
…if I credit the artist of the images?
I’m writing a book (fiction) and I have found two images on the Internet that I believe would be ‘eye-catching’ marketing tools. Unfortunately, the artwork is currently being used by a music group for two of their album covers.
Where can I get info regarding copyrights and the payment due to the artists of same, as ruled on by Canadian business law?
(Sorry, two questions, but I don’t want to see anyone (myself included) hurt by copyright infringement.)

If the artwork is truly “Public Domain”, than you can use it at will. However, you need to establish that it really is. Just because you saw it on the net has no bearing as to whether it’s public domain or not. The other problem with images of this sort is something you are probably not aware that you alluded to. Because they can be used by anyone, sometimes they will be used inappropriately or in a manner that you would rather not be associated with. This can have a disastrous effect on your efforts and in the end cost you more than if you had created your own unique look.
