It’s all music that is protected by copyright, considered legal, or only some? If it is illegal, how can you tell?
I’m trying to make this the best we can. I hope not to sound confusing. A lot of sites offering free downloads of music, and when I can check to see if it is protected or not, says no. Therefore, people are safe from lawsuits if the downloads are legal and unprotected? If unprotected music is illegal, how can you say?
Sound recordings of music does not have U.S. copyright protection if done before about 1972, and ever, but the duplication may be prohibited by state law. However, after that, everything was copyrighted from the moment of recording. To make a legal copy (discharge) of copyrighted music must have permission from the copyright owner or be able to demonstrate that you qualify for one or more legal exemptions.
