Free Royalty Free Music

If you submit a pilot to ABC or SBS, do they accept programs with licensed music, non-royalty free music?

I am a young filmmaker. I’m talking about contemporary music, from 70s onwards. Do you have to use royalty free music or is there some kind of deal between the networks?

They might accept the pilot, but it will certainly never be aired unless every last piece of music is cleared for broadcast. There is no blanket agreement between the networks and every music production company in the world, so obtaining the rights to use songs can become very tricky and costly for a network. And if you’re proposing a show, the last thing a network wants to do is have to shell out more money because the creator is married to his soundtrack.

What works for one network might not work for another, so I suggest you contact the department for each network that handles music copyrights and see what, if any of your music, could be cleared for transmission on their networks.

It’s A Beautiful Day
