Magnatune has free mp3 downloads. Go to their home page and click “Moods” for ideas. Try “Calm” or “Chilled Out,” or perhaps “Mellow.” Suzanne Teng is a flute player whose music is available there. Full samples are available for free, but you can also purchase higher quality recordings.
The Creative Commons page also has links to music you can download for free.
Both of the above are places for legal downloads with no question of copyright or licensing violation (assuming you’re just listening at home for personal use). Mp3 files can be played through Windows Media Player or other media programs. You can build your own playlist of soft music and play it in the background while doing other things.
