Classical music. Difficult question…?
Over the centuries, what allowed composers to become more independent…free from servitude to a king or a prince, etc.
That is, how did the later composers survive? Patronage? Publishing royalties?
Composers like most artists are creating things of no transcending value, so they are always at the servitude of those with money. Composers may be free from the servitude of princes and kings, but that’s been traded to servitude to film music, academia, popular culture, being jingle writers, and the whims of publishers more interested in making money than great art.
Very few composers are in the position to be able to compose as they wish and hear their music performed.
